[. . . ] At the end of sewing, the machine can be stopped by pressing the start/stop button. 54 EN ■ Ending stitching Press the start/stop button, or release the foot controller, to stop the sewing machine. If sewing is finished, raise the presser foot, and then pull the fabric to the back. * If the fabric cannot be removed, turn the handwheel towards yourself until the needle is in its highest position, and then pull out the fabric. ■ Thread cutting Line up the two threads, and then cut them with the thread cutter on the face cover. Thread cutter ■ Reverse sewing Reverse sewing is performed at the beginning and the end of sewing to prevent the thread from unraveling. * Sew 3 to 4 reverse stitches at the beginning and end of sewing to prevent unraveling. * Remove your finger from the reverse sewing button to return to forward direction sewing. * If a stitch other than a straight stitch is selected, three reinforcement stitches are sewn, and then the machine stops. Reverse sewing button 55 ■ One stitch sewing Use this when changing the sewing direction. 1 When the sewing machine is stopped with the needle raised, press the button. (needle up/down) The needle is lowered into the fabric. 2 Lift up the presser foot lever, and then turn the fabric in the desired sewing direction. Presser foot lever 3 Lower the presser foot lever, and then continue sewing. * Pressing the needle up/down button again will raise the needle. * By repeating one stitch sewing operation, it is possible to sew step by step. * The same procedure can be done by tapping on the foot controller. 56 EN Advanced operations Caution Before changing the presser foot, use the main power switch to turn off the sewing machine. Not doing so could cause injuries. ■ Zigzag sewing 1 Select the stitch in the operation panel. * Check that the OEKAKI (free-motion embroidering) button is not lit. * Refer to “Selecting the stitch” (page 44). Doing so could damage the presser foot. 3 Press the (needle up/down) button to raise the needle. 68 EN 4 Try on the jeans, and then fold up the legs at the new hemline, right side to right side. Right side Hemline Wrong side 5 Measure 4 cm up from the hemline and draw a line with a suitable marker. Right side Wrong side 4 cm 6 Turn the jeans inside out to the wrong side, and then cut along the 4 cm line. Wrong side 7 Fold up 2 cm of fabric, iron the fold line, and then fold over another 2 cm of fabric and iron in place. 2 cm Tip If the inside leg seam is very bulky, trim away the seam allowance in the first 2 cm fold. Wrong side Right side Tip If the side seam areas are very bulky, flatten them with a wooden mallet, etc. , so that the seam can be easily sewn. 9 Remove the extension table (accessory box), and then pull the jeans hem over the free arm as shown in the illustration. Extension table Free arm 10 Sew around the jeans hem, starting about 2 cm in front of the inside leg seam (refer to the illustration). Secure the beginning and end of the stitching with a few reverse stitches. Beginning of sewing 2 cm Seam area Caution Do not sew reverse stitches over the seam areas. Doing so could break the needle and cause injuries. 70 EN 71 8 Basics of OEKAKI (free-motion embroidering) Features of OEKAKI (free-motion embroidering) O = formal prefix, E = picture, KAKI = to draw OEKAKI was derived from the Japanese word “to draw”. We wanted to bring you a sewing machine which helps you create special, unique and personal projects while having fun. ● Since the feed dog is lowered during OEKAKI (free-motion embroidering) mode, the fabric can be freely moved. Stitching ● In OEKAKI (free-motion embroidering) mode, the stitch width can be adjusted by how much the foot controller is pressed. Narrow Stitch width Wide Narrow Foot controller operation * Lightly stepping on the foot controller selects a narrow stitch width; stepping further on the foot controller selects a wider stitch width. Slightly releasing the foot controller selects a narrower stitch width. Caution • • • When the foot controller is connected, the sewing machine cannot be started by pressing the start/stop button. At the end of sewing, the machine can be stopped by pressing the start/stop button. In OEKAKI (free-motion embroidering) mode, the sewing speed cannot be adjusted with the foot controller as in utility stitching mode. In OEKAKI mode, the reverse sewing button cannot be used. 72 EN Relationship between the needle, thread and fabric in OEKAKI mode, and adjusting the thread tension The quality of the sewing finish will improve if the needle and thread are selected to match the type of fabric used. [. . . ] Doing so could cause injuries. 8 Turn the handwheel to check that the needle correctly enters the hole in the needle plate. * If the bobbin case is not installed correctly, the handwheel does not turn smoothly. If this occurs, remove the needle plate and bobbin case, and install them again. For details on installing the presser foot, refer to page 26. 102 EN Storage precautions Caution Do not store the sewing machine within the reach of children.
