The left hand image is the `before' image (where you will make your correction) and the right hand picture is the `after' image. The `before' image already includes the other corrections applied by DxO. You can use the zoom slider and `hand' tool to zoom in to the area of the image you want to work on. aTTEnTIon:This tool can only be used at zoom settings over 75%; selectthe100%positionforadequateaccuracyforyourcorrections, or even200%forsmallerdustparticles. · · Horizon ­letsyoudrawalineacrossthePreviewwindowallowingthehorizon intheimagetoberealigned. Donote, however, thatthisismorepowerful thanasimplemanualcombinationofbothverticalandhorizontalkeystonecorrection, since itisalsoabletointroduceanelementof`skew'intothecorrection. 9 10 11 Quick use of horizon tool aTTEnTIon:UsingthefasttoolsonlyopenstheGeometrypaletteatthe sametimeifyouhaveenableditwiththerelevanticonatthetoprightof theworkspace. An`AsShot'buttoninthispaletteletsyouresetthequick corrections. imagewiththeeye-droppertoolmostoftenyieldsasatisfactorybalance, ifyouare carefulinyourchoiceoftheareayouwanttoappearneutralgrayorwhite. 3 toc 0 1 2 3 4 · Multi-Point Color Balance Tool (MPCB) ­Thisicongivesyouquickaccessto the4-pointimagecoloradjustment. Youwillseeacolorwheelonthe`before'image, thecorrectionswillappearinthe`after'image. Thefineadjustmentsforthisoption areavailableinthe`Colors'palette(seepage44). 5 Display icons · · After ­displaystheprocessed(corrected)imageinthePreviewwindow. Thisis anaccuratedisplayofhowthisimagewilllookwhenyouprocessitlaterduringthe `Process'phaseofyourDxOOpticsProworkflow. Pleaserememberthatsomecorrectionscannotbedisplayedatzoomfactorslessthan75%. Before / After ­This is one of the more useful features of the Prepare tab. Theleftimagewillbetheunprocessed, `AsShot'image. Therightimagewillbethe DxOOpticsProprocessedimage. Thiswillgiveyouaside-by-side, lighttableviewof bothimages. Youcanevenzoomintothesameareaofbothpicturestocompare results. 6 7 8 9 10 11 Browse image buttons aTTEnTIon:Multi-pointbalancefineadjustmentsandresetto`as-shot' valuesareonlypossibleifyouenabletheColorspaletteusingtherelevant iconatthetoprightoftheworkspace. AtthetopcenterofthePreviewwindowyouwillfindthenameoftheimagefileyouareviewing, andtorightandleftofthisarebuttonssimilartothosefoundonaVCRorDVDplayer. These buttons are useful if you select several different thumbnails in the Project window (multiselection). Youcanthenbrowsethroughthismulti-selectionusingthearrowseithersideof thecurrentfilename. · White balance color picker ­LetsyouselectthepointinthePreviewwindow imagetobeusedasthewhitereferencepointforthatimage. Thefinewhitebalance adjustmentsareincludedintheColorspalette(seepage40), butjustclickinginthe Ifyouclickthefarleftbuttonwithaleft-facingarrowheadandverticalline, OpticsProwilltake youtothefirstimagefileinyourmulti-selection. Thebuttonwithjustaleft-facingarrowhead willtakeyoutothepreviousimage(unlessyouarealreadyatthefirstimage, inwhichcase, boththeleft-handbuttonswillbegrayedout). Thebuttonsontherightofthefilenamehave similarfunctions, onlytheywilltakeyouaheadtoimagesthatarefurtherintothemulti-selection. ThesebuttonsmeanyounolongerhavetoclickintheProjectpanetobrowsemanually throughtheimages. Onthefarright-handsideofthebarabovethePreviewwindow, totheleftofthezoomslider arethreeicons(theorderisdifferentonMac). · Details · MyPalette 33 toc 0 Clickingonanicondisplaysthecorrespondingcorrectionpalette, ifit'snotalreadyvisible. 1 2 Overall Correction Palette workspace Ontheright-handsideofthePreparetabworkspace, eachpalettecanbeaccessedfromits blackheaderbarcontainingitsuniqueiconidentifierandname. Youwillalsofindtwoother iconsontheright-handendoftheheaderbarforeachpalette. Thefarrighticonisan`X', which hidesthepalettewhenclicked. Butdon'tworry, youhaven'tdeletedthepalette!Thebarcanbe redisplayedatanytimebyclickingonthepaletteiconatthetoprightofthescreen. Justtotheleftofthe`X'isaniconwithasquareandanarrow. Thisisthe`undock'icon, andif youclickonit, youwillundockthepalettesoitcanfloatonyourscreen. Noticethatyouare notlimitedtoplacingthefloatingpaletteonlyoverthePreviewwindow--youcanplaceit anywhereonthescreen. Clickingthepalettebarwillexpandanddisplaythetoolsassociated withthepalette. Clickingthebaragainwillcollapsethepalettetooldisplaybackintojustthe headerbar. Inthisway, thepalettescanstayontherightofthescreen, accessibleoneafter anotherusingthescrollarrows, orelsebeplacedanywhereonthescreenwhileyou'reusing them. TIP:Ifyouclicktheundockiconagain, thepalettewillautomaticallysnap backtoitsdockedposition. 3 Theiconsfromleft-to-rightare: · Proof this ­allowsyoutoimmediatelyprocesstheimagecurrentlychoseninthe · Toggle Grid overlay ­ superimposes and removes a grid over the image in the Previewwindowtoassistyouwithcorrectinghorizonsandimagedistortions. 4 5 6 Projectwindowtoquicklyverifyifthesettingsyouhavemadefortheimagemeets yourneedsorifadditionalcorrectionandadjustmentsarenecessary. · Toggle Image information overlay ­displaysandhidesprograminformationfor theselectedimage. Fromlefttoright, theiconsare: 9 10 11 · Move/Zoom · Histogram · EditEXIF · PresetEditor · Lights · Geometry · Colors Move/Zoom palette TIP:Ifyouhaveamousewithathumbwheel, itwillactasazoomin/out control, withinthesamelimitsasthestandardzoomcontrols. 34 toc 0 Histogram palette Thehistogramdisplayisagraphshowingthenumberofpixelsforeachtonalvalueinthethreecolorchannels, withblackontheleftsideandwhiteontheright. Youwillfinditveryhelpful tokeeptheHistogrampaletteopenwhileyou'reworkingwiththeothertools, sinceitwillvery oftengiveyouagoodideaofexactlyhoweachadjustmentisaffectingyourimage. Generally, wemayconsiderthatinaproperly-exposedimage­exceptforsubjectsthatarenaturallyvery darkorverylight­thevaluesoughttobedistributedacrossthefullwidthofthehistogram. When adjusting exposure compensation or color balance, it can be helpful to display the clippedhighlightsorshadows(i. e. whitesthataretootransparentorblacksthataretotally opaque)directlyintheimageitself, usingthethreebuttonsbeneaththeHistogramdisplay. 1 2 3 4 5 6 TheMove/ZoompalettedisplaysasmallthumbnailofthePreviewwindowimage. Agreenbox onthisthumbnailindicatesthesectionoftheimagecurrentlybeingdisplayed. Totheleftofthe zoomsliderbarisaminussign(-), withaplus(+)signtotheright. Clickingoneitherofthese decrementsorincrementsthezoomfactorrespectivelyby1%. Themaximumenlargementis 1600%!Alsototherightofthesliderthereis: 7 8 · Adropdownarrowthatallowsyoutochoosefrompredefinedzoomfactorsordirectly · A`Fit'buttonthatsetsthezoomfactorsothattheentireimagesfitinthePreviewwin- type in your own factor. To close the drop down, simply click again on the down arrow. dow. It'simportanttorememberthatthis`fit-to-window'previewimageonlyshowsan approximationofsomeofthecorrectionstobeapplied(i. e. WhiteBalance, Exposure, rough Demosaicing, Distortion, Vignetting, Tone Curve, Lighting, Hue/Saturation/ Luminance), whileotherkeycorrectionslikenoisereduction, lateralchromaticaberration, truede-mosaicing, andsharpnessprocessingarenotalwayspreviewed. This isparticularlythecasewhendisplayingatzoomfactorsbelow75%. Whileediting thesesettings, youwillprobablywanttofrequentlyzoomintochecktheeffectsof yourcorrectionsandzoomouttocontroltheimageasawhole. 9 10 11 Histogram with highlight clipping displayed · A100%buttonthatquicklyzoomstheimagetoafactorof100% Move/Zoom Palette Histogram Palette 35 toc 0 1 2 3 4 Histogram with lowlight clipping displayed Highlight recovery with areas remaining out of bounds displayed (in green on the lampshade). Stronger correction would recover 100% of the highlights. . . 5 6 Thesedisplaysareintendedtogiveatemporarypictorialindicationofthosepartsofanimage thatare`clipped'(i. e. darkareasthathavereachedminimumblacklevelorlightareasthathave reachedmaximumwhitelevel). Clickingonthe`highlightclipping'buttonwilldisplayanimage wheresmallareasshowupblack(=highlightswhereallthreecolorchannelsartatmaximum) orinothercolors(=onlyoneortwoofthecolorchannelsareatmaximum). Thereversehappensfortheshadowclippingbutton--inthiscase, thepicturedisplayedhas small white or colored areas that indicate clipping. The middle button restores the normal display. Usingthehighlightclippingdisplayallowsyoutomakeveryfineadjustmentswhenperforming highlightrecoveryonaRAWfile(seepageXX):allyouhavetodoismovethemanualslider slowlyuntiltherearenomoreclippedareasarevisible. For lowlights, the display lets you see the exact effect of DxO Lighting, Tone Curve, or the BrightnessandContrast(onanytypeoffiles). Edit EXIF palette TheEditEXIFpaletteconsistsoftwoparts: 7 8 · ImageInformation · EXIFEditor TheImageInformationsectiondisplayskeyEXIFinformationwrittenbyyourcameratothe imagebeingdisplayedinthePreviewpane. Thisinformationcannotbealteredandissaved whenyoucreateacorrectedcopyofyourimage. Itisanimportantreferenceandcantellyou if any EXIF data is missing that might affect DxOOpticsPro's ability to perform key optical corrections. TheEXIFEditorallowsyoutoaddAuthorandCopyrightinformationintheimagemetadata section. 9 10 11 Edit EXIF Palette Histogram Palette 36 Light palette toc 0 1 2 Correction palettes ThecorrectionenginesthatperformthemagicofDxOOpticsProareallcontrolledviafour palettes, eachofwhichconsiderstheimageina`photographic'way. `Light'coverseverything aboutlightingandcontrastinthescene;`Color'allowseverypossiblechromaticmodification; `Geometry'isallaboutglobalstructureoftheimage, while`Detail'goesrightdowntopixel leveltodealwithsharpnessanddigitalnoisecontrol. aTTEnTIon: Certain functions will only be available if the correction module for the lens concerned is available. When this is not the case, certain corrections will appear grayed out and hence disabled. By the same token, highlight recovery correction and precise white balance to °K accuracy can only be applied to RAW files, in which case additional controlsappear. This · `Before/After' images ­Whenyouclickonthisicon, twoimageswillbedisplayed side-by-side:oneisthestartimage, beforeanycorrection;theotheristhefinalimage processedbyDxOOpticsPro. Youcanzoominifnecessarytocomparethedetailsof identicalareasinbothimages. 3 4 5 6 Zoom Slider:NotethezoomsliderintheupperrighthandcorneroftheReviewwindow. By movingtheslidertotheleft, youcanreducethemagnificationoftheselectedimageinthe window. Movetheslidertotherightandthemagnificationoftheimageisincreased. Thereis alsoadownarrowtotherightofthesliderthat, whenclicked, willpresentadrop-downselectionofpredefinedmagnifications. Notethatasthisisnowasavedcopyandnotapreviewas underthePreparetab, itispossibletoseetheeffectsofthesharpnessandnoisereduction controlsatallzoomlevels. TIP:Ifyouhaveamousewithathumbwheel, itwillactasazoomin/out control, withinthesamelimitsasthestandardzoomcontrols. 7 8 9 10 11 Histogram Appendix 1 DxOOpticsProplug-in forAdobe®PhotoshopTM Installation DxOOpticsProexternalmoduleforPhotoshopTMisinstalledwiththehelpoftheDxODownload Manager. Youcaninstallitatthesametimeastheapplication, orlater(forexampleafterhavinginstalledPhotoshopTMonyourcomputer). TheDownloadManagerautomaticallyplacesa foldercalledDxO(withthe`Import. 8ba'fileinside), inthe`Plug-ins'folderofPhotoshopTM. The programautomaticallyplacesaDxOfoldercontainingafilenamedDxOImport. 8ba, intothe PhotoshopTMPlug-ins(orexternalmodules, dependingontheversion)directory. It is possible that the installer may not place the plug-in in the correct folder, if you have severalapplicationscompatiblewiththePlug-ins(e. g. PhotoshopTMElementsTM).
