[. . . ] RMON tables take up resources on network devices, and may affect the device's performance. Be careful not to delete tables that you yourself did not create - they may be in use by 3Com Network Director, or by another management application on your network. Examples This section describes some RMON examples supported by 3Com Network Director. The RMON Statistics group contains useful error counters for interfaces on devices that support this table. The RMON history group contains the same values stored historically for predefined sampling periods. The RMON host and matrix groups allow you to see the same data broken down by specific hosts on the network. If you know which interface on your core switch you are interested in, launch RMON directly from the device icon on the 3Com Network Director map. Alternatively, launch it from the right-click menu of an attached link. Launch your chosen RMON group, and from the View, select the Errors view. clicking OK will launch RMONView, which will fetch and display the following: Table 78 Errors Statistics History Host Matrix Live counts of total errors seen on this interface Historical counts of total errors seen on this interface Error packets transmitted by each host seen on this interface Error packets included in every conversation between pairs of hosts seen on this interface. How do I graph errors on my core switch links? Examples 451 How do I graph utilization on a specific VLAN? Select a device with ports which are members of target VLAN, and choose to view History against the device. These are easily recognized in the interface list by their interface name - the name should include the keyword VLAN. Select an appropriate sampling period from the History entries list, or create a new entry if no suitable entries already exist. Utilization for the selected VLAN across the sampling intervals chosen will be graphed. 3Com devices do not in general gather data for the aggregated link as a whole. If you select an aggregated link, and 3Com Network Director has knowledge of the ports which comprise that link, then all ports which are a member of that aggregation are presented on the menu. In the example below, the link selected is an aggregated link from 140. 204. 232. 73 Unit 1, ports 23 and 24 to 140. 204. 232. 79 Unit 1, ports 11 and 12. Figure 232 Aggregated Link Example How do I view the data associated with an aggregated link? Select one of the listed ports to view data gathered for that port. 452 CHAPTER 10: RMON Useful Information And References RMON The following section provides useful details to do with RMON. RMON was defined by the user community with the help of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). RMON then became a draft standard in 1995 as RFC 1757, effectively making RFC 1271 obsolete. All RFC standards documents are available online at the IETF web site: http://www. ietf. org RMON Support on individual 3Com devices For more information about RMON support on 3Com devices see "Supported Devices" on page 835. RMON Limits on individual devices (for table creation) Key Considerations You should try to delete RMON tables from a device when you no longer require them. RMON tables take up resources on network devices, and may affect the device's performance. Be careful not to delete RMON tables which you have not yourself manually created. 3Com Network Director creates and uses RMON tables for basic monitoring of the network - removing these tables will adversely affect this functionality. To manually delete tables from a device, see "Managing RMON tables" on page 447. 11 Overview CREATING REPORTS This chapter describes the Reporting feature of 3Com Network Director.
